FAQ’s

Why should I join the Honors Program?

We think we're a good group to be part of. The emphasis here is that you'll find yourself part of a group of students and faculty who share your commitments to intellectual achievement. You'll be sharing classes, extra-curricular activities, even some meals with people in a community that will be an important, rewarding, and enjoyable part of your college experience.

Are Honors Classes harder than regular classes?

Our intention is that work in Honors classes be of higher quality, but not necessarily quantitatively more or harder than in other classes. We expect Honors courses to be more challenging and engaging, but we do not think Honors students should be penalized by being subjected to demands for more or more rigorous work just for the sake of demanding more. Some instructors will, we expect, ask more of Honors than non-Honors students, but this is always done for the sake of students getting more out of the class, not just for the sake of having students who are capable of doing so produce more. Since many people find that work in a course that engages and challenges them more fully is in some ways easier to do than work in a course which you find boring, you may surprise yourself by even finding some Honors courses easier going than some other courses.

Will I have time in my schedule to fit in Honors classes?

Yes. Honors classes are spread over the entire curriculum, in liberal arts core courses and throughout the various undergraduate colleges.

Do I have to take certain classes to be part of the program?

While students must accumulate a certain number of Honors credits to graduate with University Honors designations, no specific courses, other than those required for the Honors thesis or project, are required. Strictly speaking, students who wish to be in the Program but not in the end graduate with an Honors designation on their transcript are not even required to do this much.

Is there scholarship money offered to Honors Program participants?

The University Honors Program awards 50 scholarships each year to qualified incoming first-year students. See Scholarships for more information on these awards.

What are Honors students like?

They're both serious and fun, as appropriate to the occasion. It's not a bunch of "nerds," though we were admittedly a bit worried about that image ourselves when we celebrated Pi Day (3.14 = March 14) by sharing dessert pies that evening in the Honors lounge. As the evening progressed we decided it's OK to be a bit nerdy.

What are Honors professors like?

They are dedicated teachers who are eager for the greater interaction with students that Honors classes and events allow for. They are accessible to students beyond regular office hours, and are available to serve as advisors for Honors theses and projects. They are chosen from among the University's finest faculty members.
