Signs and Symptoms

  • Itching and scratching of hair covered areas
  • Scalp inflammation and matted hair
  • Red bite marks
  • Visualization of the louse on the skin
  • Visualization of the egg (nit) on the hair shaft

Treatment

  • Body creams, lotions, or shampoos – prescription or over the counter
  • Prescription or over the counter medications 
    • Follow product information according to instructions. Do not use more frequently than recommended. Over use can cause skin irritation or be absorbed into the body.

General Measures

  • Machine wash all recently worn clothing and linens in hot water. Dry in the dryer’s hot air cycle.
  • Without washing, clothes may be sealed for 10 days in a plastic bag to kill lice and nits.
  • Dry clean non washable items or seal in plastic bag for ten days.
  • Another alternative is to leave clothing in freezing temperatures outside enclosed in a plastic bag overnight.
  • Boil articles such as combs, curlers, hairbrushes and barrettes. Hair does not have to be shaved.
