Signs and Symptoms
- Itching and scratching of hair covered areas
- Scalp inflammation and matted hair
- Red bite marks
- Visualization of the louse on the skin
- Visualization of the egg (nit) on the hair shaft
Treatment
- Body creams, lotions, or shampoos – prescription or over the counter
- Prescription or over the counter medications
- Follow product information according to instructions. Do not use more frequently than recommended. Over use can cause skin irritation or be absorbed into the body.
General Measures
- Machine wash all recently worn clothing and linens in hot water. Dry in the dryer’s hot air cycle.
- Without washing, clothes may be sealed for 10 days in a plastic bag to kill lice and nits.
- Dry clean non washable items or seal in plastic bag for ten days.
- Another alternative is to leave clothing in freezing temperatures outside enclosed in a plastic bag overnight.
- Boil articles such as combs, curlers, hairbrushes and barrettes. Hair does not have to be shaved.
