Insect Bites

Symptoms:

  • Stinging sensation
  • Itching
  • Mild swelling

Home Care/Self Treatment:

  • If stinger present, gently scrape site until stinger is completely removed ( DO NOT pluck or squeeze stinger)
  • Gently cleanse site
  • Apply cold compress or ice pack for 20 minute intervals for first few hours
  • Apply meat tenderizer or baking soda paste to site -or- may use over-the-counter topical lotion or cream.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers and antihistamines may be used

Seek Medical Attention if:

  • Difficulty breathing and/or swallowing or chest tightness
  • Swollen tongue, throat or lips
  • Onset of hives, rash, itching or swelling in areas other than the sting site
  • Muscle stiffness, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, feeling faint, or restlessness
  • Signs of infection- increased redness, swelling, drainage, or pain
