Symptoms:
- Itching, pain, and burning around rectum
- Small amount of bright red blood on toilet tissue or in toilet bowl
Home Care/Self Treatment:
- Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day
- Increase fiber in diet – fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals and breads
- Increase physical activity
- Sit in a warm bath for 10 minute intervals several times a day
- Keep rectal area clean
- OTC treatments may be effective for mild itching, pain and irritation (Tuck’s pads, Prep H ointments, etc.)
- Avoid straining for bowel movements and prolonged sitting, standing or lifting
Seek Medical Attention if:
- Hard lump develops around rectal opening
- Excessive rectal bleeding or black stools occur
- Severe pain that is not relieved with home care instructions
- Pain or bleeding lasting longer than 1 week
- Signs of infection – increased redness, swelling, drainage or fever
