Symptoms:

  • Itching, pain, and burning around rectum
  • Small amount of bright red blood on toilet tissue or in toilet bowl

Home Care/Self Treatment:

  • Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day
  • Increase fiber in diet – fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals and breads
  • Increase physical activity
  • Sit in a warm bath for 10 minute intervals several times a day
  • Keep rectal area clean
  • OTC treatments may be effective for mild itching, pain and irritation (Tuck’s pads, Prep H ointments, etc.)
  • Avoid straining for bowel movements and prolonged sitting, standing or lifting

Seek Medical Attention if:

  • Hard lump develops around rectal opening
  • Excessive rectal bleeding or black stools occur
  • Severe pain that is not relieved with home care instructions
  • Pain or bleeding lasting longer than 1 week
  • Signs of infection – increased redness, swelling, drainage or fever
