Canker Sores

Symptoms:

  • Ulcer on the soft tissue inside mouth – round whitish spot with red edge or halo
  • Burning sensation

Home Care/Self Treatment:

  • Avoid spicy, acidic or salty foods
  • Apply ice to area
  • Avoid irritating site while brushing teeth
  • Over-the-counter canker sore treatments and pain relievers may be helpful (Oralgel, Ambusol, Orabase)

Seek Medical Attention if:

  • Signs of infection are present – increased redness, swelling, drainage or fever
  • Uncontrolled pain after using home care measures
  • If ulcers are present for longer than 2 weeks
  • Difficulty swallowing
