Opportunities for
extra credit:
You can do up to 3 things (any combination of the below) to earn up to 9 extra points on your final exam. Each “credit” will earn 1-3 points depending on the quality of your response.
Option 1: Participate in a research study using the PSPM system. Write up a one- to two- page informal paper summarizing the study (e.g., purpose, methods) and addressing at least two ways that the study relates to class. This most often would be in the form of critiquing the methodology of the study (be sure to explain fully why the problems are a problem and what would be better), but your comments might also deal with ethical issues, operational definitions, etc.
Option 2: Get IRB certified at http://phrp.nihtraining.com/users/login.php.
Option 3: Summarize an empirical journal article that is NOT on the topic you did your paper for in this class and is NOT an article you’re reading for another class. You should summarize the article (in a more formal way, like the article summaries you did early on in this class) as well as critiquing the article as in Options 1. These papers should be 2-3 pages.
Option 4: Attend a psychology-research talk that is pre-approved by me. Write up a two page informal paper summarizing the content of the talk, with particular emphasis on the methods used in the research. Then critique the research presented, relating it to at least two concepts from class.
