I teach in the English Department at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. My area of speciality is Rhetoric and Composition, which examines how and why we produce written communication in all of its various forms, be that with pen and paper or with computers. I teach courses on literacy and writing, many in the Professional Writing Program here in the department.
I am currentlywriting about rhetoric as re-creation, in the sense of both play or leisure as well as a contribution to the world's emergence. Much of my work is informed by critical theory, especially the works of Deleuze, Derrida, and Latour who have helped me explain how writing is always an ecological activity, distributed among various agents and across assemblages. This has important connections with the work of Hayles, Fleckenstein, and others. It informs writing program administration, ecocomposition, and aspects of technology and composition.
Another area of interest is Native American culture and rhetoric. This informs my research because I think the perspective of the Lakota people that I know helps me shift from the European tradition toward forgotten or repressed elements that can aid in the development of a more sustainable paradigm of communicating about the world. I am in debt to Lakota and Diné (Navajo) people who have shared their worldviews with me. |
