UNI Welcomes Chilean Geographer Dr. Fabián Araya Palacios, Visiting Scholar at UNI Geography

The UNI Department of Geography and Office of International Programs welcomes visiting scholar Dr. Fabián Araya Palacios, Associate Professor of Geography at the Universidad de La Serena in La Serena, Chile.  Dr. Araya's exptertise is in geography education as well as sustainibility/natural resource use.  Dr. Araya is actively involved in promoting geography education throughout Chile, including the major teacher education program at the Universidad de La Serena.  Prof. Araya's natural resources/sustainability research includes two current projects.  One is a collaborative project with the University of Regina in Canada to assist rural Chilean communities with water conservation and the management of water resources.  The second is his role as an investigator in the NSF funded “Institute for Integration of Research on Climate Change and Hazards in the Americas” that is in collaboration with the AAG.  This project seeks to spark greater collaboration between U.S. and Latin American geographers in response to climate change and hazards.  Dr. Araya will be engaged in collaborative research, guest lecturing, and K-12 outreach during his January 26th to February 25th stay at UNI.
