Career
Fair
By: Tammy Schmitz & Cheryl Kalina
Twice a year employers from around Iowa converge on
the UNIDome for the Career Fair. The concept behind this fair is
to give students an opportunity to network with prospective employers
and make personal contacts in order to prepare for the job market.
Connecting with people is important for career and job success,
however this fall with there being a total of 191 employers there
didn’t seem to be very many interested in hiring graphics
majors. It is discouraging to wander around the UNIDome only to
encounter customer service or sales positions. But don’t despair,
there are so many opportunities available to graphic comm graduates.
Visit UNI CareerLink through MyUNIverse for full-time, part-time,
and internship positions. Experience.com is a job search website
that is always listing new opportunies.

Graphic Communications
New iMac Lab
By: Matt Charlton
UNI will be adding a new Mac lab to the Graphic Communications
laboratory. Fifteen new iMacs will be installed in room 18 of the
Industrial Technology Center this fall. Each computer will be equipped
with a twenty inch monitor, 2 GB of ram, and a 180 GB hard drive.
The programs to be installed will include software such as Adobe
Illustrator CS3, In-Design CS3, Photoshop CS3, Go-Live CS3, Macromedia
Dreamweaver 8, Flash Pro 8, Fireworks 8, and other software.
Having the iMacs will help prepare students for “real world”
experiences. Today, a majority of design firms use Macs for a variety
of reasons. Allowing students to gain experience on both Macs and
PCs will provide a huge advantage as a designer.
Due to the hard work and determination of Dr. Carl Blue, there
will be a state of the art computer lab to bring us into the twenty-first
century. A big thanks goes out to Dr. Siobahn Morgan, who was instrumental
in getting this process up and running, and making this possible
for the students. UNI has spent between $22,000 and $26,000 for
the new start of the art lab. Special thanks also go out to the
leaders in the Department of Natural Sciences for approving the
funding.
