Gardening

by Leta Riordan

OVERVIEW:
Gardening

GRADE LEVEL:
Grade 3

GEOGRAPHIC THEMES/KEY IDEAS:
Location, Place, Human Environment Interaction

GEOGRAPHY STANDARDS:
Standard 8: The characteristics and spatial distribution of ecosystems on Earth's surface.
Standard 11: The patterns and networks of economic interdependence on Earth's surface.
Standard 15: How physical systems affect human systems.
Standard 18: How to apply geography to interpret the present and plan for the future.

TIME:
Thirty minute introduction to a three week unit

MATERIALS:
Index cards
Overhead transparencies
Cassette tape: "Farm Life" from Were You Born in a Barn?
The Gardener by Sarah Stewart

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: The student will be able to
A. identify various hobbies and businesses related to gardening
B. understand that there are many different reasons people grow gardens and plants

PROCEDURE FOR TEACHING THE LESSON:

  1. Identify a gardener and his tools. Do a hand count of the gardeners.
  2. Brainstorm for ideas about why people garden.
  3. Read The Gardener by Sarah Stewart.
  4. Discuss Lydia and her gardening.
  5. Play "Farm Life" from Were You Born in a Barn?
  6. Hand out prepared cards to the students. Tell them it's their secret. One students stands and says," I have a hobby or business." He/she gives three hints about the hobby or business. The students raise their hands to ask questions that are answered with a "yes" or "no." If a student knows the answer, he/she says, "I know what your hobby (business) is, it is _____." The teacher can begin with an example. Limit this activity for time and interest levels.
  7. Review the difference between a hobby and a business.
  8. What are some of the reasons people grow gardens?
  9. Name some gardeners and farmers in our community. A hobby? Business?
  10. Remembering the letters we read in the book, become gardeners or farmers and write a letter to one of your classmates describing your imaginary garden or farm, or telling about a garden or farm you really like.
  11. Provide resource books for ideas.

EXTENDING THE LESSON:
Divide the class into groups and choose an area of interest.
Guide them in doing research about their chosen topic.
Invite guest speakers to further interest the students in possible gardening activities for enjoyment, food, profit.
Plant and plot your garden project.

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:
None for this introductory lesson.
