Geographic Alliance of Iowa
I IS FOR WHERE IN INDIA?
Dr. Kay E. Weller
adapted from Kim Hassentritz Mt. Pleasant High School
Materials:
- Atlases, one for each person
- 5x7 index card
Procedures:
- Make out 5x7 cards prior to class.
- Choose places in India, one per card
- Write numbers 10-1 on cards in permanent marker
- Hand out prepared cards to students
- Make sure students use pencil and they can correct clues or Reorder them.
- Go through an example and model for the class what they should do.
- On another sheet of paper have students brainstorm characteristics
of their particular place using all 5 themes of geography- use atlases,
prior knowledge, class info, etc.
- Students must write out 10 characteristics of their place in simple
statements.
Example: This place is known as the Gateway of India
This place is in western India
This place is a port
- Have students order their statements, which are clues to their location,
in order from hardest to easiest clues
-the easiest clue is always the absolute location (clue #1)
the next easiest clue #2 is always the relative location
- Students should transfer prewritten and ordered clues to 5x7 card.
- Students turn in cards/ teacher evaluates for:
- 10 clues total
- that all themes are represented
- that clues are ordered correctly so the location is not given away
too soon
6. After evaluating clue cards, the teacher can play "WHO
AM I??"
* The teacher will have to model deductive reasoning here
- divide class into two teams
- read clues aloud one at a time
- students may use atlases
- points awarded according to what clue number the location is identified
- to eliminate blind guessing each team may only guess the location 3 times
and then they are "out" for this round.
