Student Photography and Poster Contests

"Using Our Rivers, Changing Our Rivers, and Saving Our Rivers"


Photography Contest Specifications:

1. An original black and white or color photograph taken by the student that centers on river use, how rivers change, or saving rivers.
Information from the Geography Action! Rivers 2001 NGS web site should be considered when taking the photograph.

2. Photographs can be no larger than 8X10.

3. Photographs must be on some type of backing, matting is fine, but no frames are allowed.

4. A caption and reference to where the photo was taken must accompany the entry.

5. Photographs may be taken with a regular or digital camera.

Poster Contest Specifications:

1. The poster must reflect river use, how rivers change, or saving rivers.
Information from the Geography Action! Rivers 2001 NGS web site should be considered when drawing the poster.

2. The poster should be no smaller than 8 ½ x 11 and no larger than 11 x 17. (They cannot be 3-D.)

3. Any flat medium may be used.

4. All work on the poster must be that of the student.

5. The poster must have a caption that explains its purpose.

General Requirements for both Photography Contest and Poster Contest Entries:

1. On back of poster or photograph, write the student's full name, teacher's name, grade, school, school address, school phone #, and teacher's email address.

2. Entries will not be returned and will become the property of GAI.

3. Entries must be submitted by November 20.

4. Each school may submit one winning entry in each applicable division: Grades K-3, 4-6, 7-12 for each contest.

Prizes will be awarded in each grade division for each contest. Participating photographs and posters will be posted in the GAI office and winning entries will be included in the report to National Geographic Society. Winners will be notified by December 15, 2002.
