WEEK CONTEST

"HERE TODAY, HERE TOMORROW
A Geographic Focus on Conservation"
To encourage students to become more aware
of and involved in conservation issues and
practices in their home communities the Geographic
Alliance of Iowa is sponsoring two contests.
- A Narrative or Video Essay Contest
Topic My Community and Conservation Past, Present, Tomorrow
Using the Geography Awareness theme, describe past and present conservation
issues in your community.
Discuss your ideas for future
Conservation initiatives.
Be thoughtful and be creative.
Medium Written essay or a video production.
- Create a Postage Stamp
Topic My Community and Conservation Past, Present, Tomorrow
Design a postage stamp depicting one of the conservation issues ( population,
bio diversity, oceans or fresh water).
Use your imagination.
Be creative.
Medium Art
All of the winning entries will be displayed at the University
of Northern Iowa
Department of Geography as a part of Geography Awareness Week.
CONTEST RULES
- Initial judging should be done within a school, or home school group.
Only one (1) entry for each age level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) should be submitted.
- All entries from each school should be sent together to:

Please submit the name of a contact person with the submissions.
- Each entry should include name, age, grade level, school or home school
group.
Please include the contact persons name, address and phone number.
- All entries must be received by November 7, 2000.
OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN
SUBMITTING ENTRIES:
- Postage stamps should be flat and no larger than 1ft. by 2 ft.
- Essays should be no more than 300 words and type written or word processed
on white paper with black ink.
Video essays should not exceed 5 minutes in length and be in VHS format.
- Posters and essays will not be sent back and become property of the Geographic
Alliance of Iowa.
- Each student who participates in the contest will receive a certificate.
Winners will be eligible for prizes provided by the Geographic Alliance of
Iowa.
- You may promote this contest through local businesses or libraries in
your area and display work locally.
