Syllabus for Applied Tuba and Euphonium

Attendance Policy:

If a lesson is to be missed, please notify me by phone or email BEFORE missing. Missed lessons without 24 Hour notice and prior arrangement WILL NOT normally be rescheduled. Other lessons missed by the student will be rescheduled as deemed appropriate by the instructor. In the event that a lesson is missed because the instructor is unavailable, the student has the OPTION of rescheduling the lesson. Should the student elect not to reschedule a lesson missed by the instructor, there will be no effect on the grade.

Course Requirements:

• All students will pass the appropriate Key Study Test at the end of each semester. These tests are cumulative and will include all scales ever covered to date. FAILURE TO PASS THE KEY STUDY TEST WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF “INCOMPLETE” FOR THE SEMESTER. THE KEY STUDY TEST WILL BE RESCHEDULED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT SEMESTER. THE ‘INCOMPLETE’ WILL BE REMOVED AFTER THE TEST HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED.

• All students will perform a jury at the end of each semester. The grade for this is assigned by the jury committee and will be figured into the final grade. On occasion (such as the semester of the senior recital), the requirement for the final jury may be waved.

PRACTICE: It is expected that a student will practice each day. If a student is registered for 1 hour of credit, then 1 hour of practice per day is expected; registered for 2 hours credit, then 2 hours practice, etc.

Grading Scale:

Because of the nature of the course, grading is not entirely objective. During each lesson, the instructor makes notes as to the work being done by the student. The final grade is determined by such factors as:

Letter grade:

A:
Always prompt and prepared for lessons. Clearly demonstrates that there is consistent, methodical practice of lesson materials by the obvious progress as demonstrated in lessons. No unexcused absences.

B:
Average preparation for lessons. Preparedness is not consistent. Practice routine is inconsistent.

C:
Consistently tardy and/or occasional missed lessons. Often under prepared for lessons. Little progress due to lack of a practice routine.

D:
More than 3 unexcused absences and/or a missed jury. Has not demonstrated efforts to work on lesson materials.

F:
Lack of any effort to come to lessons prepared. No regular practice and repeated absences.
