UNI Awarding Criteria

Wondering if you are eligible for various forms of financial aid? The chart below explains the EFC range a student needs to quality for the award as well as the maximum amount available to students for the year.

UNI receives financial aid funds from federal, state, and university sources. These funds are awarded to students based on their EXPECTED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION (EFC) and dependency status. Your EFC is determined by using the information provided on your financial aid application in a federal calculation. The EFC is shown on your Student Aid Report (SAR).

The Department of Education offers the Federal Pell Grant to undergraduate students with the lowest EFC's. The lower the EFC, the more financial need demonstrated by the student. The EFC is also used as the foundation for awarding other types of financial aid.

The amount of all grants as stated on your Award Letter is based on full-time enrollment (12+ credits for undergraduates and 9+ credits for graduates). The actual amount of your grant(s) will be reduced if you are registered for fewer than full-time credits when funds are disbursed. Certain funds are awarded exclusive of one another. We encourage you to check with a Financial Aid Office staff member before withdrawing from any courses.

* Amount of award may vary depending upon state residency and federal, state and institutional funding.

The Federal Pell Grant and SEOG are only awarded to students pursuing their first B.A. degree.

In the event that available state funds are insufficient to pay the full amount of each approved grant, the Iowa College Student Aid Commission has the authority to administratively reduce the award.
