Degree-Seeking and Enrollment at UNI
Fall/Spring: Students employed as Work Study or Departmental employees must be admitted in an undergraduate or graduate degree program and enrolled for a minimum of 6 undergraduate hours or 5 graduate hours per academic semester*. Students may not work beyond the last day of the term if they are no longer enrolled as a degree-seeking student, regardless of the current time sheet cutoff.
*Correspondence hours are not counted in the minimum hour requirement for Work Study or Departmental Employment.

Summer: Degree-seeking students are eligible to work during summer session as Departmental employees if they are either enrolled at least half-time (5 hours undergraduate; 4 hours graduate) during the summer OR demonstrating enrollment at least half time during the previous spring and the upcoming fall semesters.

Degree-seeking students must be enrolled half time (5 hours undergraduate; 4 hours graduate) during summer to be eligible for Summer Work Study (if available).

Enrollment Exceptions
If a student is not meeting the enrollment criteria an Enrollment Exception Request may be emailed to the Student Employment Coordinator (evelyn.waack@uni.edu). Exceptions are approved on a semester by semester basis, with students generally only having this option once during their time at UNI.

Maximum Hours per Week
Work Study and Departmental employees may be employed for a maximum of 30 hours per week while school is in session (40 hours/week when school is not in session). The 30-hour per week rule applies to all combinations of on-campus employment. For example if a student works at the dining center, library, and financial aid office during the same week, they must not exceed 30 hours worked for the week.

International students may only be employed for a maximum of 20 hours per week while school is in session.

Departments should be sensitive to each student's academic progress and be willing to adjust the work schedule if necessary. Only in extenuating circumstances can departments allow a student to work up to 40 hours/week. Departments are encouraged to have student employees visit with individual academic advisors to assure that the student's academic progress is not affected by working extensive hours.

Work Study
Number of Work Study Jobs
Students may only have ONE Work Study job at a time. However, students may have both a Work Study and a Departmental job as long as they do not work over a total of 30 hours per week while school is in session (40 hours per week while school is not in session).

Earning Total Work Study Award
Work Study student employees may earn their entire Work Study award during fall and spring semesters. Typically, awards are made in equal amounts for both fall and spring semesters. If a student earns over their awarded amount for fall, funds can be used from the spring award, provided the student will also be enrolled in spring courses. Once the total Work Study award is earned, the student must be paid by departmental funds or end employment.

Work Study Employment Ending Date
Work Study timecards must end on the last day of the spring semester.

Quality Work & Termination
Students on Work Study or Departmental payroll must perform their work satisfactorily. Verification of quality work completed must be submitted on bi-weekly time sheets. Conducting a student employee orientation at the start of employment and an evaluation each semester is recommended.

If a student is not meeting the job expectations, it is recommended that the student and supervisor meet to discuss the situation. The discussion should be documented. All transgressions directly related to a student’s employment should continue to be documented. Should the situation continue, the supervisor may make arrangements to discontinue the student's employment.

Student Employee Grievances
Student Employees requesting to file a grievance with their on-campus employer should review the complete policy at http://www.uni.edu/president/policies/1204.shtml.
