Payment

On-campus student employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule. Paychecks are no longer mailed to students, rather all student employees must sign up for direct deposit upon their hire.

Weekly Timecards will follow the time out schedule:

  • Tuesday at noon
  • Wednesday at noon
  • Wednesday at 5:00 pm
  • E-mail notifications are sent at 7:30 a.m. each weekday and at 12:30 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

All student employees must be paid for all hours worked. If the total allocated Work Study award has been earned, the employing department must pay any additional earnings from their departmental budget. Voluntary services are in violation of the Fair Labor Standards of 1938 and are not permitted.

Pay Rates
The minimum wage rate is $7.25. A maximum wage rate of $15.00/ hour is also applicable for student employees. If you wish to pay a student beyond $15.00/hour the department should attach their rationale via email to evelyn.waack@uni.edu.

The hiring department is responsible for determining wages for their student employees. Some factors to keep in mind when setting a wage rate are:

  • the duties of the job
  • ability to hire (some positions are more difficult to fill than others).
  • the amount of responsibility needed by the student (student supervisor vs. assistant).
  • the student experience level in the field.

Annual Increases
It is recommended that departments increase student wages on an annual basis. Based on recent budgetary concerns annual increases are now based on the discretion of the department. If a department wishes to change the listed wage they would complete a SEAF Change. Wage increases were not required for the 2011-12 year.

Timecards
The workweek for all employees reporting time is Sunday through Saturday. Student employees record the start and stop times on their timecard and the timecard system calculates the total hours each day and for the week. Once a timecard is completed and submitted, the workflow process electronically routes the timecard for approval and when approved routes to Payroll for processing.

Dining Services students use the Kronos time system to record their time and an electronic timecard is not required.
