Course Changes and Special Situations
Dropping Credit Hours/Withdrawing from Classes
A student who is withdrawing from classes at UNI should contact the
Registrar's office at (319) 273-2241 to initiate the withdrawal process.
See the withdrawal procedure website for additional information.
Students who withdraw are required to return unearned federal aid in
equal proportions to the time not in attendance until after the 60%
point in time of the term. For example, if a student completes 30% of
the semester, then 30% of the federal aid receieved may be retained
and the other 70% of the federal aid received must be returned. However,
loans must be paid back according to the loan repayment requirements.
Funds will be returned to the financial aid programs in the following
order: federal loan programs, federal grant programs, state programs,
UNI programs, outside agencies, student.
Students are notified of adjustments to their financial aid award via
their university bill.
Guided Independent Study Courses
Financial aid is not available to students who are enrolled in guided
independent study (GIS) courses. However, should the student be enrolled
at least half-time in regular coursework the student would then be eligible
for federal financial aid and that aid would go towards their total
bill, which might include charges for guided independent study courses.
The Continuing Education Office at UNI would be able to assist students
in finding alternatives to GIS if needed.
If there are questions please contact the UNI Financial Aid Office
at 273-2700.
