Financial Literacy Month 2013

Throughout the month of April a series of speakers will be on campus discussing a variety of topics related to personal financial literacy.  Each workshop will conclude with a drawing for $100 scholarship, gift cards and t-shirt prizes! Scholarship is only available to UNI students enrolled in Spring 2013 courses.

Know Before You Owe: Student Loans and Repayment

Don’t wait until you’ve graduated to learn about your student loans! Take control now and learn about your student loans and the options that you’ll have to repay them in the future. This session will provide each student with their own individual loan overview as well as information about student loans and the repayment process. Financially, accepting your first job can be a confusing process. Private vs. Public employers, benefits, and salary negotiation are all factors in finding that perfect first job. Staff members from UNI Human Resources will discuss what to watch for and be aware of when accepting a full-time position.

Don’t Let Your Cash Flow Out the Window: How An Energy Efficiency Can Impact Your Budget

This session will provide tips and tricks to help students save money on their utilities both before and after they sign their leases. Participants will learn about heating sources, windows, and other often unnoticed factors that separate good apartments from money pits.

In addition to these sessions the UNI Financial Literacy Club meets every Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 to discuss a variety of topics related to personal finance. Each meeting begins with a presentation by Financial Literacy Club President Michael Finley, followed by individuals that work directly with the topic of the evening. Cash prizes are given away at every meeting!

April 1 from 7:00-8:00 area car dealer, Marty Rouse will present information on the car buying process from the inside. Marty’s candid approach will allow you to learn some of the techniques used to negotiate and purchase a vehicle.

April 8: The home buying process.

April 15: Connie Moyer, local mortgage banker will discuss the home buying process and what you should know from the lenders perspective.
