Integrating Disciplines in the Liberal Arts Core
Goal: To equip instructors with the pedagogical, technological, and curricular tools and support for successful interdisciplinary teaching.

Description: Participants in this institute will explore the pedagogy of interdisciplinary teaching through discussions, modeled experiences, and literature review. The focus is on teaching strategies based on integrated learning goals and undergraduate learner characteristics. Topics of broad appeal are explored as mechanisms for interdisciplinarity within single courses of study. Medievalism, for example, will be featured as a foundational theme for faculty from diverse areas of expertise to use for crafting integrated learning in their classes. Richard Utz, Professor of English Language and Literature, will facilitate this discussion. The institute will also explore a variety of educational technologies that support interdisciplinary teaching, including Weblogs, electronic databases, and electronic portfolios. Technology support will be available to facilitate sharing best practices and teaching strategies on an ongoing basis. This institute is designed for instructors of Liberal Arts courses that are currently or potentially interdisciplinary in nature, including Capstone courses. Emphasis will be placed on formation of and active participation in faculty learning communities during the 2005-06 academic year.
