Week 6 Questions

This week you read 3 incredibly famous historical pieces. One was written by Walter Benjamin in 1936. The second was penned by Theodore Adorno and Max Horkheimer in 1944. And the third is the first chapter of Susan Sontag's groundbreaking book on photography, "On Photography." All of these authors consider the huge changes in American society in the last 100 years and the role of photographs in this society. Please consider the following questions as you write your synthesis:

  • What sorts of connections can you draw from all three authors in terms of their take on reproduced images, “the cult of remembrance” (as Benjamin calls it), depictions of reality, and industrialized society?
  • How does each author criticize current photographic (and film) culture?
  • In their estimation, does technology interfere with reality?
  • How is the notion of authorship important for these authors?
  • Finally, how do the authors discuss ideological and the political nature of photographs and mass produced culture in general?
