The UNI Classic Upward Bound Program participates in the State of Iowa Summer Food Service Program. What this program allows Upward Bound to do is to receive funds for meals served during the residential program at the University of Northern Iowa. This helps defray the cost of boarding our students during the summer enrichment program. By following meal requirements, our students are participating in this program for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their meals are checked for the proper menu items on each plate brought through by each student. This is then logged in a binder for record keeping.
Eligibility for the Summer Food Service Program is determined by the low-income eligibility of our students at the time they are initially brought into the Upward Bound program. If a student is low-income at the time of initial selection into the Upward Bound program then they are eligible and their meals count to receive funds from the Summer Food Service Program. Those students who do not meet the low-income criteria, their meals do not count.
Every student is being fed while on campus three meals per day Monday - Thursday and breakfast and lunch on Fridays, regardless of eligibility for Summer Food Service Funds.
