Dr. Jan C. Robbins
Dr. Jan Robbins was head of the English Department from 1976 to 1987. He earned his B.A.
in journalism from Penn State. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with an M.A.
and Ph.D. in journalism and mass communication. He began teaching there and moved on to
the Rensselar Poytechnic Institute before coming to UNI. Dr. Robbins has been interested
in professional and technical writing for the past 30 years. He is involved in IEEE and
STC Professional Writing Societies. He has also done consulting and research on writing with organizations like IBM, Xerox, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Another of Dr. Robbins's
interests is freedom of expression in schools, especially high schools. This interest in the
First Amendment manifests itself in examining censorship of high school student press and use
of schools by non-school publics.
Dr. Robbins, a Pennsylvanian, was drawn to UNI because he "fell in love with
the Midwest while at the University of Minnesota." He says,
"I love it here and always have." Another added bonus is "
the high quality of faculty, especially in the English Department."
