Short Story

Founded at Oklahoma State University in 1989, Short Story is a biannual journal devoted exclusively to publishing the best of and about short fiction. Although its originators have moved on to other jobs at different universities around the country, most of them still participate in the editorial duties of the journal. Founder and Editor, Mary Rohrberger (in 1989, Professor of English and Director of Curricular Affairs at Oklahoma State) is currently employed as a Professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa.

Recently the University of New Orleans became Short Story's third university affiliation. Beginning with Short Story's Spring 1996 issue, the University of New Orleans has agreed to gratefully contribute monetary and editorial support. Short Story's Associate Editor in New Orleans will be JoAnna Leake, who currently teaches at UNO. In addition to JoAnna, James Knudsen, Associate Professor of English at UNO, Freddrick Barton, Professor of English at UNO, and Laurie O'Brien, Associate Professor of English at the University of Western Florida, will serve as Fiction Editors while James White, Professor of English at the University of Southern Alabama, will serve as a Review Editor.

Since its inception, Short Story has been dedicated to providing a publishing outlet for serious writers of short fiction and an arena for short story theorists and critics to present essays and articles. Recent issues have featured writers from around the country, including essays by Jerome Klinkowitz and Stuart Levine, and fiction by Patricia O'Donnell, Pamela Painter, and Ron Wallace. The near future promises special items arising from the Fourth International Conference on the Short Story in English to be held this June in Iowa.

Short Story is the only journal which publishes original short stories, critical essays, book reviews, and occasional interviews all under one cover. We believe this unique format makes it increasingly valuable to anyone with a serious interest in the genre.

Subscriptions and Submissions

Short Story is published in the fall and spring under the aegis of the Association for Textual Studies. It is a joint publication of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and the University of Texas--Brownsville in Brownsville, Texas. Subscriptions are $7.00 annually; single issues are $4.00 each.

The Editors of Short Story solicit manuscripts on every aspect of the short story, particularly those with a theoretical basis, as well as original short stories, short stories in translation, and book reviews. All submissions should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Manuscripts not accompanied by postage paid envelopes become the property of Short Story and will not be returned. Articles should not exceed 400 words. Notes should be inserted at the end. Contributors should follow the MLA Style Sheet, Fourth Edition. Short Story does not discourage fictions which are brief, innovative, or otherwise different from the mainstream traditional forms. Short Story aquires and retains exclusive rights to any submission upon its publication in the journal, but will generally grant permission for reprint in a collection of the author's works. Opinions expressed are those of the authors alone and should not be attributed to the editors, to personnel of either university, or to any other person. All correspondence and manuscripts, subscriptions, books for review, or interviews should be sent to:
