UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA Position Announcement Position: The Department of Earth Science at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position beginning August 2009. We seek an earth science educator who will teach undergraduate earth science courses and undergraduate and graduate science education courses. At UNI, earth science includes the areas of meteorology, astronomy, and geology. The applicant should have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research, and a willingness to seek external funding and advise undergraduate and graduate students. Required: A doctorate in an area of earth science, earth science education, or science education is required at the time of appointment. Preparation for or experience in teaching earth science courses and undergraduate and graduate courses in science education is required. Current knowledge of science education research and innovative teaching techniques, and a record of successful teaching experience are also required. Preferred: Candidates with secondary science teaching experience; and undergraduate or graduate preparation or experience in weather and climate are strongly preferred. Appointment: August 2009 Duties: Courses to be taught will include secondary science teaching methods, a required M.A. science education course, and introductory earth science and earth science education courses. Courses to be taught may include an introductory weather course. The successful candidate will develop and seek funding for a research program in earth science or science education; advise undergraduate earth science majors, earth science teaching majors, and M.A. science education majors; and pursue service activities including teacher professional development. Department: The Department of Earth Science has 9 full-time faculty members (5 geologists, 2 astronomers, 1 meteorologist, and 1 earth science educator), a secretary, a lab technician, and approximately 80 majors divided among geology, earth science, and earth science teaching. Science Education: Science Education is an interdisciplinary unit within the College of Natural Sciences and includes 8 faculty and 6 associated faculty members from the College of Education, including Malcolm Price Laboratory School. Science Education is responsible for secondary science teaching methods courses and content courses in the Basic Science Minor for Elementary Education Majors. In addition to the Minor, Science Education has two interdisciplinary pre-service secondary science teaching majors as well as a large M.A. Science Education program.
