John Cage Atlas eclipticalis (1961)
for any ensemble 0 to 86 instruments, premiered by Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic - a work using star charts to aid in note selection

Eric Ewazen Devil Septet (1972)
a work written during his freshman year at Eastman School of Music as a student of Joseph Schwantner - 4 tubas, 2 percussionists and piano

Greg Shapley Machine (1997)
created from the constituent elements of digital computers - eight-bit binary digits (eight ones or zeros) provide the source material for the pitch and rhythm. The specific series of numbers was derived from the graphic below.
