Theory & Competencies
Ideal standards are taught in class; reality is different in actual practice. What student development theory(ies) do you ascribe to? How do you apply theory to practice? What are the ACPA & NASPA competencies? This session will provide an overview of theories, competencies and how they can support your professional endeavors.
Policies & Legal Issues
This session will include a review of the laws pertaining to higher education (i.e., Affirmative Action, Title IX, Clery, ADA, etc.), issues associated with the laws (i.e., parental notifications), and a discussion of knowing when to seek legal assistance.
Effectively and efficiently managing the operations of housing facilities is a critical part of any housing department. A discussion of facility life cycles, layouts and operations or building systems will be included. Developing a working knowledge of procedures to address various facility issues, while considering the impact on the students, guests and budget will be discussed.
Emergency Protocols & Preparation
The health, safety and security of our students has become one of the top priorities of all colleges and universities. What role do mid- and upper-level administrators play in emergency responses? What is a COOP? Where do bias response, threat assessment and student intervention teams fit into your institution? What are your thoughts about their effectiveness?
Budgeting & Finance
Understanding and managing the basic components of a housing budget will be discussed. Also included in this session will be a discussion of different types of budgets; the creation of new revenue streams; and the all-too-often need to cut spending.
Contracting & Occupancy Management
Developing and managing a plan to maintain maximum occupancy of facilities is critical to the future of our institutions. Does your institution have a residency requirement? What incentives are provided for students to live on campus? What types of living options are available for students, including traditional, suites, apartments, gender inclusive housing, etc.? How do you manage over capacity of students? Under capacity?
Management & Supervision at the Next Level
Hiring and firing; assessing performance; and motiving employees are often skills that are learned on the job. These skills are often influenced by the specific policies and procedures of the department and institution for which you work. This session will discuss appropriate direction and coaching when supervising graduate and professional staff, including merit employees. Other topics may include how to retain qualified staff; the adherence to selection policies; and how to infuse diversity into the hiring process.
Politics & Savviness
Institutions of higher education are often rife with personal and political agendas. Recognizing, analyzing and navigating political processes in higher education will be the focus of this session. Identifying stakeholders and understanding their priorities, as well as being aware of the influence of local, state and national policies on higher education, will be discussed. A discussion of how to “hold your own” in the political arena of higher education may be included.
Communication & Social Media
Colleges and universities face multiple challenges for attracting and retaining undergraduate students. Marketing has become essential in order to publicize both student affairs departments and institutions as a whole. Social media has now become ubiquitous in our world and in the lives of our staff and students. How do you utilize social media? What happens when social media tools become negative, derogatory and hateful means of communication?
Program Development & Assessment
How do student affairs professionals develop, manage and assess departmental programs? What role do strategic plans play in program development? How do we determine and balance student needs, interests and satisfaction? This session will share information about how to fully develop a department and/or program through evidence-based practices, including a discussion of formal and informal assessment measures and the development of plans to address the resulting data.
