95 percent of freshmen benefit from participation in MAP-Works survey

Between September 16 and October 11, 2013, new freshmen at UNI increased their chances of social and academic success by taking the 15-minute MAP-Works® (Making Achievement Possible) survey.  Immediately after taking the survey each student receives an individualized report that includes valuable feedback, recommendations and information related to succeeding in college. 

Faculty, staff, and peer educators with professional connections to each student also obtain access to the reports.  These “Direct-Connects” use the information to connect with their students, offering encouragement, information and referrals related to freshman success.

More than 95 percent of freshmen participate in MAP-Works this fall.  Resident Assistants had a leadership role in promoting the importance of the survey and encouraging participation.  Many residence hall communities had 100 percent participation. 

“Students enter college with the expectation of finishing,” said Nick Rafanello, Assistant Director of Residence/Community and Leadership Development, “ UNI is set up to support the decisions and transitions needed to succeed.  MAP-Works helps students and staff identify strengths and challenges in the transition.  Results are based on students' self-reported academic and social habits,” he said. “For students, the survey information provides an honest assessment of their progress through the transition to UNI.  For staff, the results are used to provide support and make adjustments early in the semester that are tailored to students' individual needs.” 

MAP-Works® is a collaborative project of the university’s Divisions of Student Affairs and Division of Academic Affairs, under the direction of the First Year Council.
