Tuesday, 11/17/09 The Buddhism of the Dalai Lama- Lifelong University 1:30 pm - 3 pm, University Book & Supply-- Tibetan Buddhism is often considered strange and obscure but the best-known figure of this religion, the Dalai Lama, explains that it is a religion of compassion and peace, and committing oneself to the happiness of others. This course explores the basic teachings of Buddhism and looks particularly at its Tibetan form. Particular attention will be paid to the person of the Dalai Lama, who has accepted an invitation to visit the University of Northern Iowa. No dates have been given at this time. Tuesday, 12/1/09 UNI's Executive Development Center workshop Business & Community Services Room 30 --Managing a Multi-Generational Staff will be facilitated by Tom Hall, an assistant professor of communication studies at UNI since 2004. He has extensive business experience ranging from a manager at a large retail store to an owner of his own business. Friday, 4/16/10 7 pm, Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center --San Jose Taiko has mesmerized audiences for three decades with the powerful and propulsive sounds of the taiko drum. Inspired by traditional Japanese drumming, San Jose Taiko performers express the beauty and harmony of the human spirit though the voice of taiko. "By playing Japanese-American music we honor our cultural roots. We draw from a traditional source, yet still express ourselves as Americans. Sunday, 4/18/10 3 pm, Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center-- Once every four years, the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition invites a select few young pianists to compete for significant awards. Since 1962, this esteemed piano competition has honored Van Cliburn, who was only 23 years old in 1958, when he won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow – at the height of the Cold War. Continuing the tradition, the Cliburn Competition Silver Medal winner, selected on June 7, 2009, will perform on the Great Hall stage.
