Accommodations are determined for each student every semester. Requests for each service must be supported by appropriate, professional and reasonably current documentation (as described in the documentation guidelines). A particular disability does not determine the accommodation. While students with either the same or different diagnoses may be eligible for and/or utilize a particular accommodation, there is no established "matching" of disability and accommodation...one size does NOT fit all!
Classroom accommodations may include, but are not limited to, the following:
ALTERNATE FORMAT TEXTS
Includes texts in electronic text (e-text) format, on tape, in large text, or in Braille. SDS works with students to help identify the most appropriate format for each individual student on a case-by-case basis.
NOTE TAKING ASSISTANCE
Students who are eligible receive a copy of either another student's notes or a copy of the instructor’s notes to augment their own. This service may also include copies of instructor overheads and/or Power Point slides.
SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS
SDS will coordinate interpreting services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Sign language interpreting services are available for classroom and lab requirements as well as academic advising and meetings with other university offices.
Individuals whose disability limits their ability to take notes because of auditory processing difficulties, illegible handwriting, short-term memory deficits, or other functional limitations that make note taking difficult may be eligible to use a tape recorder to record lectures. SDS has tape recorders available for checkout or students may provide their own. |
