Module 4: Pansexuality

Definition:Pansexuality is a sexual orientation characterized by attraction, regardless of gender identity or biological sex.

Facts:

•The word pansexual is derived from the Greek prefix pan-, meaning "all".

•Pansexuality is different than bisexuality because bisexuality focuses only on attraction to both men and women, remaining within the traditional gender binary, which is society's standards of how males and females should look and behave; to fit society's standards, a person must be one or the other. •Many people who identify as bisexual are attracted to people outside the gender binary, but do not identify as pansexual because the term is relatively new and uncommon.

Issues:

•Pansexuals are only attracted to human beings. The term "all" as stated above in the Greek prefix does not include inanimate objects or animals.

•Many people still refuse to acknowledge the difference between pansexual and bisexual for many reasons, including fear or ignorance of transgender people.
