Application for Financial Support- MBLGTACC 2012-February 10th-12th, 2012

APPLICATION DUE DATE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH, 2011

 

The Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Ally College Conference is an annual event oriented toward developing leadership, activism, networking, health and empowerment within the queer community in the United States and Canada. It is the oldest queer conference in North America and is primarily held on college campuses across the Midwest region of the United States. Since 1991, this conference continually provides an opportunity for collegiate faculty, staff and especially students to demonstrate and develop knowledge and skill regarding queer issues such as social justice, education, history and much more.

This year, MBLGTACC takes place at Iowa State University on February 10th-12th, 2012 in Ames, Iowa.  This application is an effort to provide the students of University of Northern Iowa a chance to attend this conference.  This financial support will apply toward early registration and transportation to and from the conference.

Important Dates and Information:

  • Students must fully complete the application process by Friday, November 18th 2011, 5pm
    • Applications must be dropped off to the Office of VP for Student Affairs, 118 Gilchrist.
  • Results of the applications will be sent out December 2, 2011
  • Available to undergraduate and graduate level students
  • Priority will be considered (not guaranteed) to students submitting a proposal to present an original workshop. However, the most important factor in selection is the submission of an essay. Details regarding the essay can be found below.
  • Those students selected will receive financial support for registration fees and travel, including transportation via a University vehicle and gas.

Application Process:

  • Submit a 500(min)-1,000(max) word essay, surrounding the following questions:
    • Why do you want to go to MBLGTACC 2012?
    • How will your attendance at MBLGTACC 2012 contribute to you personally? The UNI community? As a whole? The queer community? The multicultural community?
    • How has the queer community bolstered your identity?
    • How do you intend to use the knowledge gained at MBLGTACC on UNI's campus?
  • Please include a cover page, including the following information:
    • Name
    • Email address by which we can contact you
    • Address
    • Student Organization Affiliation (if any) and position in organization (if any)
    • Date/Year
    • Classification
    • GPA

 

Essay Format:

  • Choose a central idea for the essay. Using the questions as a starting point, please structure your essay using a standard format, including:
    • A thesis statement
    • Complete sentences and paragraphs
    • An introduction and a conclusion
    • Use of examples
  • Integrate your answers, using complete paragraphs and sentence structure.

Conference Cost

  • Registration:
    • Early Registration: $60
    • Registration after December 16th, 2011: $70
    • Registration after February 8th, 2012: $80
  • Transportation (gas): $75, roundtrip. Students funded will also be transported via a University vehicle.
  • Lodging: varies- the cost for a hotel room ranges from $60-$150 per night
  • Cost of food will vary depending on personal preference. However, we recommend allotting at least $35 per day for food cost, broken down as follows:
    • Breakfast: $5
    • Lunch: $15
    • Dinner: $15
    •  Approximate cost, 3 days of food: $105

o   Approximate Cost (2 nights) without funding: $300-$410 depending on registration dates

 

  • With funding, the approximate cost ranges from $165 to $275. The Dean of Students office will fund early registration fees and transportation, including a vehicle and gas. Students, regardless of funding, will still be responsible for food and lodging.
  • You can withdraw from the conference, however, there is a $20 registration and administration fee taken out of your refund.
  • A submitted application is communication that you will attend if funded. These costs are approximate, and for planning purposes only.

Expectations:

  • Students in attendance at MBLGTACC 2012 are representatives of the University and are expected to follow the Student Code of Conduct, as outlined here: http://www.uni.edu/policies/302.
  • Students receiving support are expected to attend the conference in its entirety.
  • Students attending MBLGTACC 2012 that are funded will be expected to meet with Melissa Payne and Kaitlin Korbitz in order to discuss their experience at the conference, in addition to the potential any information brought back from the conference could be used for LGBT programming at UNI.
