BASIC Computer Use

  1. Use the correct STARTUP PROCEDURE:
    1. If a green LED on the computer tower is on, push the ON/OFF button in and hold it until the LED goes OFF.
    2. When neither green LED on the computer tower is on, Push the ON button momentarily.
    3. Check the monitor LED to see that it is ON.
    4. Do not respond to anything from the Gateway Startup page (black background with white lettering). The computer should pass through this as part of its normal startup procedure.
    5. If the computer has an uncompleted task, such as uncompleted printing, click on "End Task."
    6. When the Novell dialog box appears, "Library1" should be entered in the Username box. Click on "OK." Click "Cancel" if another dialogue box appears before the desktop.

  2. Use assigned computer unless changed by teacher. Do not change seats.
  3. Report any computer problems immediately. You will be held liable if the problems aren't reported.
  4. Do not change any wiring connections. Take care to keep cables out from under chairs. Do not walk on wires.
  5. If the computer freezes:
  6. Use the correct SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE. DO NOT just push the OFF button.
    1. Go to START button; Click on SHUT DOWN
    2. Click appropriate RADIO BUTTON in dialogue box
    3. When the message "You may now shut down the computer" appears on the screen, push the ON/OFF button on the computer in and hold it until the computer shuts down.

  7. Leave the monitor ON.
  8. Do not change any monitor settings.
  9. Consequences: Students who do not follow these rules will lose computer privileges and may lose class privileges.
