Elevation Layout Instructions

1. Begin with the "GRADE LINE" or "GROUND LINE"; 2. Use "ACTUAL SIZE" measurements and add the "TOP OF FOUNDATION WALL" a minimum of 6" above the grade line; 3. Layout the "FLOOR LINE" above the "Top of Foundation Wall" at either 11.5" for a 2x10 floor joist or 13.5" for a 2x12 floor joist ; 4. Layout the "CEILING LINE" above the "Floor Line" at 8'-1.5" for 8"-0 high walls, 9'-1.5" for 9'-0 high walls or 10'-1.5" for 10'-0 high walls; 5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 if you have an upper level; 6. Layout the "ROOF PITCH" you used on your "Wall Section" from a point on the "Ceiling Line" that represents the inside of an exterior wall; 7. Add the thickness of your "RAFTER" parallel to the "Roof Pitch" ( use 6" for 2x6 rafters, 8" for 2x8 rafters or 10" for 2x10 rafters); 8. Layout the "CENTER OF BUILDING" by dividing the width by 2 and subtracting 4" for the exterior wall thickness (subtract 5.75" if using 2x6 walls); 9. Extend the "RAFTER THICKNESS" to the "Center of Building" to locate the "Ridge Line"; 10. Layout the "ROOF OVERHANG" from your "Wall Section" and extend the "Rafter Thickness" to locate the "TOP & BOTTOM OF FASCIA"; Note: Bottom of Fascia should not extend below top of Windows and Doors. 11. Layout the "TOP OF CHIMNEY" by locating one edge of chimney from an exterior wall, add the width of the chimney (24" to 30"), measure 10'-0 from the center of the chimney toward the "Center of Building" and mark the roof, then measure upward 24" to find "Top of Chimney"; Note: If Chimney is within 10'-0 of the "ROOF PEAK", the "Top of Chimney" must be 24" above the "PEAK". 12. Layout the "TOP OF WINDOWS & DOORS" at 6'-8" or 7'-0" above the "Floor Line"; 13. Layout the "WINDOW SILL" heights for each of the different sizes of windows from your "Window & Door Schedule"; 14. Layout the "GARAGE FLOOR" height 2" above the "Grade or Ground Line" or 4" below the "Top of Foundation Wall" line; 15. Layout the "TOP OF GARAGE DOOR" at 7'-0" or 8'-0" above the "Garage Floor"; 16. Layout the vertical spacing of the "SIDING" (4", 6", 8", 10" or 12") or the "BRICK" (3") from your "Wall Section"; 17. Layout the spacing of the "ROOF SHINGLES" (6" to 8") from your "Wall Section" along the top edge of the "Rafter"; 18. The "BASEMENT WINDOW" ( 20" TO 24" high), "EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW" (42" to 48" high), "BASEMENT FLOOR" (4") and "FOOTINGS" (8", 10" or 12" high) are OPTIONAL. 19. Label all heights by name and size or spacing. 20. Place your Tilte Block in the LOWER RIGHT HAND corner.
