Mentors In Violence Prevention

The Heartland Mentors in Violence Prevention Campus Leadership Institute is a two-day, interactive training designed for college administrators, faculty, staff, service providers and community partners who desire to integrate a bystander education and intervention model as a part of their violence prevention programs and initiatives.

Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) is a leadership program model that motivates both men and women to play a central role in solving problems that have historically been considered "women's issues" such as domestic violence, sexual assault and harassment. Utilizing the unique bystander approach to prevention, the MVP program views all individuals not as potential perpetrators or victims, but as empowered bystanders who can recognize and confront harassment and abuse.

The goal of The Heartland MVP Campus Leadership Institute is to develop and establish a core group of committed faculty, staff and administrators to serve as trainers and facilitators and deliver effective bystander education and intervention programming to their respective college and university campuses. Trainers will be encouraged to infuse the MVP program model into curriculum, student organizations and comprehensive campus safety initiatives.

MVP, co-founded in 1993 by Jackson Katz, has been evaluated for effectiveness by independent researchers in college, military and high school settings. The MVP program model inspires leadership by empowering individuals with concrete options to affect change on these issues. Upon completion of the Institute, participants are certified to utilize the MVP model on campus with their students, faculty and staff.

This MVP campus leadership institute is sponsored by the Center for Violence Prevention at University of Northern Iowa, Jana's Campaign Inc. and the Office of Student Success and Engagement at Johnson County Community College.
