Graduate Assistantships/Scholarships

A limited number of graduate assistantships are available, depending on allocation from the Graduate College.  Typically second year students are given priority because completion COUN 5105 Counseling Skills is essential in order to work as a lab assistant.

Graduate Assistant Position Description

Graduate Assistantship and Scholarship Forms are available online, http://www.grad.uni.edu/assistantships.  Application deadline is February 15, 2016.


Robert L. Frank Scholarship

Award will be $400 for the academic year.  Both Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling students are eligible.

Scholarships will be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Completion of at least one full-time semester of coursework in the counseling program (9 credits)
  • Financial need (FASFA forms completed)
  • Academic performance in previous graduate work (minimum 3.25 GPA)

Applicants should submit the following materials:

  • Two letters of recommendation (from professionals excluding UNI counseling faculty) which address the applicant's counseling performance and/or potential, as well as her/his leadership qualifications
  • A brief statement of how graduate study will contribute to your professional goals
  • A statement documenting the degree of need for financial assistance (including financial aid already secured)

Norene A. Smith School Counseling Scholarship

School Counseling students only are eligible.  Applicants should submit the following materials:

  • Submit a well written essay on how you have made a difference in children's lives (two pages single spaced)
  • Include two letters of support (not from departmental faculty) that verify how you have made a difference in children's lives
  • Submit a copy of your transcript verifying that you have completed at least one semester in the program (9 credits)
  • Financial need (FASFA forms completed)
