PSYCH 1001 Introduction to Psychology Research Requirements

One of the requirements of Introduction to Psychology is participating in out-of-class research experiences. You need to earn four out-of-class research credits as part of your total grade in PSYCH 1001.  If you fail to participate in the required number of research credits, you will receive an 'Incomplete' for the course and risk a reduced grade for the course as determined by your instructor. These credits may be earned by any combination of the following (this is more clearly detailed on your PSYCH 1001 syllabus):

  • Participation in research conducted by Psychology faculty and graduate or upper division students
  • Summarizing a peer-reviewed journal article
  • (Per approval and guidelines specified by your instructor) Attending a special presentation on a psychological topic and writing a summary of the presentation

Your PSYCH 1001 syllabus should provide instructions on how to complete the article summaries. And your instructor will give you further details on how to get credit for the third activity.

Research Participation—Student Information

What research is available?

Each semester, a variety of research is conducted in the Psychology Department by both faculty and students. This research may include social, clinical, developmental, personality, industrial, cognitive, and learning psychology, as well as in the field of psychobiology. In any one semester only some of these areas will be represented. Research studies will generally begin to be available during the second or third week of school, and studies will become available and change as the semester progresses. Participating in research is a good way to learn more about psychology and methodology, while contributing directly to knowledge of human behavior. Students are able to view available studies at any time by clicking on the 'Research Participation System' link and logging in using your CatID and a specified Research Participation System password (sent to you in an email at the beginning of the semester).  The last day to participate in research is usually 1-2 weeks before the semester ends.

How to participate in research

You can sign up for studies using the Research Participation System. You can find information on how to use this system by clicking on the "Step by step instructions for participants' link.

Before signing up, check to see if there are any special conditions for participation in a particular study. Some studies may request only participants with certain characteristics (e.g., being male, a smoker, or a native English speaker). If you are younger than 18 years, you will need to obtain parental permission to participate in all studies. Contact the researchers prior to the research study for more information if this applies to you.

You should sign up for each study only once. Credits for participation vary, and are listed next to the study description in the Research Participation System.

When you arrive at the research session, you will sign and receive a copy of a statement of informed consent. The informed consent form will be your proof that you have participated in a study. You should also receive an automated email any time that you sign up for a study, cancel out of a study, or receive credit for a study.

When you have finished the required number of research credits in the Research Participation System, you have completed the requirement.

If things go wrong

Researchers have an obligation to treat participants with respect and dignity.  Any student who has a complaint about a study (e.g., you showed up but the researcher didn’t,  the researcher was discourteous to you, the researcher didn’t fully explain the study,  you didn’t get credit for participating) should contact the Research Participation System administrator as soon as possible. Their contact information is listed on the login page of the Research Participation System.

Educational goals

Once you show up for a study, the researcher has an obligation to explain what you will be required to do, what the study is about, and what questions are being answered by the research. If the educational goals of your participation are to be met, it is important that the study be fully explained to you before you leave the session. This will usually occur during a “debriefing” period at the end of the session.  Feel free to ask questions. Researchers will be glad to answer them.

The purposes of research in the Psychology Department at UNI are both scientific and educational. Most of the information in your text was discovered by research of the same kind that you will have an opportunity to participate in. Thus, you may be able to add, in a small but significant way, to our growing knowledge about human psychology.  At the same time, you will have a chance to see psychologists at work doing research, and this will add to your understanding of the scientific process in general and psychology in particular.
