Dr. Brenda Bass
Dean (Interim), College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
Thank you for visiting the website of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. I hope you find the information on these pages useful and interesting, whether you are thinking about applying to one of our academic programs or just browsing to learn more about the College.
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is one of four colleges at UNI. We serve over 2,000 majors in seven departments. Our 115 full time faculty teach a large proportion of classes in the Liberal Arts Core, and offer nineteen undergraduate majors, thirteen minors, seven certificates and eight Master’s degrees. The College also houses research and outreach centers, including the Center for Social and Behavioral Research and the Center for Violence Prevention.
The rigor and high quality of our programs is based on having a faculty of scholar-teachers who are deeply engaged with their fields and dedicated to bringing their knowledge and experience into the classroom through innovative teaching. Faculty in the College have won numerous teaching awards, and strive to create a strong learning environment within which students can become lifelong learners. At the same time, they engage in world class research, receiving funding from government agencies and private foundations, as well as publishing in the leading journals of their fields.
As appropriate to our social science mission, students in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences focus on studying and solving real world problems, preparing them to pursue fulfilling careers in their chosen fields while engaging with the world around them. Through field experiences, service-learning, internships and research programs, the College provides important opportunities for students to take their knowledge from the classroom and apply it in the real world, whether at the local, national or international level. The College has a long standing commitment to international studies that cuts across, teaching, research and service. In today's globalized environment, an educated person needs to understand our connections to global politics, economics, society and culture. The class offerings, study abroad opportunities and research agendas of the faculty, make our College a strong center of international engagement on campus and in the state of Iowa.
Active learning, high expectations and engagement with the society and world around us are what make the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences an exciting and visionary place to become life-long learners. As Dean of this College, I am proud of our ongoing contributions to the social, economic and cultural well-being of the State of Iowa and the world beyond.
