CSBS embraces the idea of a teacher-scholar model, in which excellence in scholarship is a critical component in creating a vibrant university community where teaching and learning thrives. The college prides itself in having faculty and students working closely together to ensure student success. Students receive one-on-one advising from faculty members, who work to ensure that appropriate classes are selected. Faculties also work closely with students in research. All courses have a research component and the college hosts the annual CSBS Student Research Conference, with students across Iowa and neighboring states presenting research findings and analyses.
Our departments offer nearly 50 courses of study for majors, minors, and certificate programs, from traditional liberal arts degrees to applied programs to teacher preparation programs, each distinguished in their own way. Several undergraduate programs such as Gerontology, Public Administration, GIS Science and Criminology provide unique opportunities for study in the state of Iowa. The Social Work Department produces the largest number of Social Work undergraduates in Iowa, while Geography, Anthropology, Interior Design and the Textile & Apparel programs offer state of the art laboratory equipment and hands on experience. History, Psychology, Political Science and Sociology provide a comprehensive education in all the facets of their disciplines, preparing students for graduate or law school, as well as a variety of careers.
CSBS also offers a number of graduate degrees in Psychology, History, Geography, Social Work, Counseling, and Social Science Teaching. Graduate programs in Women's and Gender Studies and Public Policy offer unique interdisciplinary programs with opportunities for close collaboration with faculty. These Masters level programs help students acquire important skills for professional careers and prepare students for doctoral level studies.
