Iowa gambling addicts get help seeing, defeating habit
"Their ultimate goal must be more than stopping gambling, Pierce said. Unless people address the reasons they turned to gambling, they will be at great risk to relapse.
Pierce said the situation is not as hopeless as many addicts believe. She cited a University of Northern Iowa study that found that more than 70 percent of people who complete gambling-addiction treatment remain clean for at least a year. "

High number of unplanned pregnancies spurs effort
"The research at UNI is being done in conjunction with the universities of Iowa and Alabama. The same foundation gave $11.5 million for projects and research over a five-year period. Mary Losch, assistant director of the UNI Center for Social and Behavioral Research, will direct the research.
"We picked projects that could have a high impact, yet be feasible and sustainable," Losch said. If successful, Iowa's effort will serve as a model for other states seeking to reduce unintended pregnancies."

UNI to lead research program aimed at reducing unintended pregnancies
"Mary Losch, an associate professor of psychology at UNI, will head up the research portion of the initiative, which will include five individual projects. The overarching goal is to reduce unintended pregnancies and abortion rates by determining the most effective ways of educating young women about contraception and pregnancy-planning services and increasing access to facilities that provide these services."

Number of smokers in Iowa dips, study finds.
"Eighteen percent of Iowan adults smoked cigarettes last year. That compares to 20 percent in 2004 and 23 percent in 2002, according to the survey."
