The Counseling Center provides a variety of services to UNI students. Counseling services are confidential and provided free of charge to students who have paid the Student Health Fee. There may be a fee charged if any are tests administered. Faculty and staff seeking counseling services are encouraged to utilize the Employee Assistance Program.

Individual Counseling

The Counseling Center provides short-term individual counseling. You and your Counselor will discuss the actual number of sessions necessary to address your concerns.

Individual counseling sessions are usually scheduled weekly or every other week.

Group Counseling

Group counseling involves meeting with 6 to 8 other students with similar problems to discuss those areas that interfere with your ability to function at an optimal level.

Groups are led by one or two staff members

Students are usually asked to make a commitment to staying in the group for at least one semester.

Groups we typically offer included:

Sexual Abuse Support

Eating Disorder Support

Interpersonal Relationships

Contact the Counseling Center to find out what groups are currently offered.

Couples Counseling

Counseling can help students work through problems they are having in their relationship. Married and unmarried students are welcome to come for couples counseling, as well as students in traditional and non-traditional relationships.

At least one member of the couple must be a UNI student who has paid the Student Health Fee in order to receive couples counseling.

Medication

When appropriate, you may be referred to a Student Health Clinic physician or a psychiatrist in the Cedar Falls / Waterloo community for medication evaluation and consultation. You will be responsible for arranging to pay the cost of any medication prescribed.

Referral to a Community Agency

Because we offer primarily short-term counseling, we provide referral information for appropriate community resources to students who needs are beyond the scope of the Counseling Center.

Consultation

The Counseling Center psychologists and mental health counselors are available to consult with faculty, staff members, friends or family members who have concerns about a student.

If you have concerns about a student that you would like to discuss, call the Counseling Center at 273-2676.

Because of Confidentiality reasons, we cannot provide information to you about the treatment or a specific student without the student's written permission.
