For urgent situations outside of office hours, please call UNI Public Safety at 273-2712 and they will contact a Counseling Center staff member if necessary.

How to Make an Initial Assessment Appointment

To schedule an Initial Assessment appointment, please call the Counseling Center at 273-2676. You will need to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete a "Request For Services" form.

During your Initial Assessment session, you and your counselor will explore your concerns and discuss what additional services may be helpful to you.

After your Initial Assessment appointment, if your plan includes continued services at the UNI Counseling Center, you will be assigned a counselor for regularly scheduled appointments.

What Is Counseling?

  • Confidential discussion between yourself and your professionally-trained counselor about personal, social, or emotional issues that you may not be able to discuss with a friend, roommate, or family member.

Identifying behaviors or ways of thinking that have not worked well and changing them in ways that will improve your happiness and functioning.

Development of decision making skills needed to meet the challenges of living and learning.

Confidentiality

Information shared by you in group or individual counseling sessions will be treated by the Counseling Center staff with strict confidentiality and is protected to the full extent of the law. That information will not be disclosed to anyone outside the Center without your written permission except when, in the judgment of your counselor, such disclosure is necessary to protect you or someone else from imminent danger.

The Counseling Center is committed to being knowledgeable and sensitive regarding issues of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, religion, and ability.

We are unable to provide counseling or psychological advice by e-mail, but we encourage you to call the Counseling Center at 273-2676 if you wish to arrange to speak with a Counselor.
