The University of Northern Iowa is planning to offer an MA in English with an emphasis in Teaching English in Secondary Schools (TESS) to teachers in the Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Dubuque areas. Additional sites may be added if sufficient interest is expressed. The program will be offered to a cohort group that will proceed through the program together over a three-year period.
Teacher Licensure
Prior undergraduate course work in each of the following:
Advanced Writing or Teaching of Writing
American Literature
Modern or Ethnic Literature
Young Adult Literature
Teaching of English (620:190)
The graduate program advisor will work with you to develop a program of study (a set of courses that will lead to the degree), to include a course from each of the following categories:
American Literature
British/Commonwealth Literature
Multicultural Literature
Literature Elective
Students will submit a portfolio and complete an approved research paper, and complete a final written and oral comprehensive exam.
Please note: A maximum of six credit hours earned previously may be applied to the program. The applicability of prior credit depends on many factors, including the nature of the course, the institution, instructor, length of time that has passed since course completion, etc.
Iowa Communications Network (ICN)
Courses in this program are offered primarily via the ICN. Delivery of ICN programs is limited to the state of Iowa.
MyCourses
Courses in this program have an online component utilizing MyCourses, a computer conferencing program requiring Internet access and a web browser — no additional software is required. Students may need access to someone who can assist with computer set-up.
UNI campus
Summer sessions in this program may involve some on-campus or central site study.
Iowa Writing Project
Up to six hours of Iowa Writing Project credit may be applied to the degree (excluding 620:133g).
