This program is designed for those wanting a Master of Music in Music Education. Upon completing the program, you will have developed leadership skills as an accomplished teacher, enhanced your teaching credentials, gained access to current educational trends and issues and broadened your perspectives on music education.

Please note: Students interested in earning the MM degree are required to take the Departmental Diagnostic Examination. The purpose of this examination is to identify your strengths and weaknesses in music history and music theory. The diagnostic examination is used as a formative assessment to help guide your course of study. It is not used as a criteria for admissions decisions.

Courses in this program are offered primarily via the ICN. Delivery of ICN programs is limited to the state of Iowa.

MyCourses
Courses in this program have an online component utilizing MyCourses, a computer conferencing program requiring Internet access and a web browser — no additional software is required. Students may need access to someone who can assist with computer set-up.

UNI campus
Summer sessions in this program may involve some on-campus or central site study.

Introduction to various research methodologies used in music education.

570:230 Foundations of Music Education, 3 credit hours
Examination of the foundations and underlying principles of music education.

570:245/570:145g Developments & Trends in Music Education, 2 credit hours
Evolving issues important to music educator.

570:255 School Music Administration, 3 credit hours
Philosophy, management and public relations techniques and procedures associated with administration of elementary and secondary music programs.

570:282 Seminar: Music Learning & Behavior, 3 credit hours
Exploration of behavioral, cognitive and developmental theories affecting music teaching and learning.

570:287 Measurement & Evaluation in Music Education, 3 credit hours
Study of the measurement and evaluation techniques for music aptitude and achievement. Emphasis on developing teacher-made tests and available standardized music tests.

570:299 Research, 3 credit hours

580:210 Analytical Techniques I, 3 credit hours
Investigation of music from chant through 18th century. Examination of major composers and their works in historical context, emphasizing development of Western tradition.

580:211 Analytical Techniques II, 3 credit hours
Continuation of 580:210. Investigation of music written from 1800 to present day. Examination of major composers and their works in historical context, emphasizing development of Western tradition.

590:221 Research and Bibliography, 2 credit hours
Acquaints student with source materials in music and in locating thesis topic. Should be taken during first semester in residence by all graduate music students.
