If there is sufficient interest, the University of Northern Iowa's Department of Curriculum and Instruction is planning to offer a five-course sequence (15 graduate credit hours) that will lead to the Iowa Reading K-8 endorsement for licensed teachers.  The courses will be offered over the Iowa Communications Network (ICN).

The Reading K-8 endorsement is one of the most popular and marketable Iowa endorsements for teachers. By taking the UNI courses that meet the endorsement requirements, teachers will learn how to assess students’ reading and then design and implement instruction for them in ways that will help them become skilled and successful readers. The sequence of courses is designed to help participants learn how to:

For teachers who hold the Iowa teaching licensure for K-8, the following courses will qualify you for the Reading K-8 endorsement in nearly all cases.  For 5-12 regular classroom teachers, these courses will fulfill a portion of the licensure requirements. Anyone interested in the Reading 5-12 endorsement should ask his/her undergraduate institution to analyze transcripts to verify the courses needed to complete the 5-12 endorsement.

Offered spring semesters

230:238 Advanced Assessment and Evaluation of Literacy Development, 3 hours of graduate credit
Experience in assessment and evaluation of literacy processes. Survey of interrelationship of assessment and evaluation to literacy development including current issues and practices. Prerequisite(s): graduate standing, previous coursework in literacy education, or consent of instructor.

Offered summer semesters

230:247 Remedial Reading, 3 hours of graduate credit
Selection, implementation and interpretation of a variety of literacy assessment procedures and the development of effective individualized instructional programs.  Prerequisite:  230:238; Corequisite:  230:292

230:292 Experience in Reading: Tutoring, 3 hours of graduate credit
Supervised tutoring in the field, involving assessment procedures and literacy instruction.  Prerequisite:  230:238; Corequisite:  230:247
Students will be expected to audio tape assessments and videotape all lessons.

Offered fall semesters

230:245 Ideological, Cultural, and Sociopolitical Issues in Children's Literature, 3 hours of graduate credit
Advanced literacy course exploring ideological, cultural, social, and political issues in children's literature. Study in sociocultural contexts of literacy instruction, with critical analysis of literature as an instrument to inform and transform life as well as learning. Prerequisite(s): 230:044

OR

230:240 Language Development and Variability, 3 hours of graduate credit
Exploration of research on factors generally associated with variability in language and literacy development, on methods designed to promote language and literacy development, and on roles of teachers and parents in promoting this development in children with differences.

Limited enrollment

Enrollment is limited to 20, with preference given to practicing teachers who hold the Iowa Classroom Teacher K-8/5-12 licensure.
