The University of Northern Iowa offers a course sequence that leads to the Driver Education Endorsement. Teachers may earn the Driver Education (7-12) Endorsement by completing nine semester hours of credit that includes coursework in accident prevention, drug and alcohol abuse, vehicle safety and behind-the-wheel driving. For licensed secondary teachers*, completion of the courses indicated in the program of study qualifies individuals to teach both the classroom and behind-the-wheel components of driver education.
* If preparation for the initial teaching license was at the elementary level, completion of student teaching in driver education at the secondary level is also required. However, for licensed elementary teachers who have at least two years of teaching experience, the secondary student teaching requirement may be met by completing the Experience in Safety Education course and providing a letter that documents the number of years of classroom experience.
Courses will be taught via the ICN, with in-car and in-class experiences arranged in both the fall and spring semesters. Please call 319-273-2121 or 800-648-3864 for current ICN sites.

Driver and Traffic Safety I and II are taught primarily via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) to sites around the State where clusters of students are located. In conjunction with Driver and Traffic Safety I and II, students also enroll in Experience is Safety Education. Students who complete UNI’s approved program are recommended by UNI to the Board of Educational Examiners for the DE endorsement.
Students may also obtain the Driver Education endorsement based on the State minimum requirements that allow students to complete course work from any accredited institution, as long as the course work completed satisfies the required content areas. Upon completion of the DE endorsement based on minimum requirements, UNI will assist applicants in filing the appropriate application to add this endorsement to their teaching license. This option does not provide the institutional recommendation.
Both the UNI endorsement option and the State minimum approach require an “evaluation of transcripts.” To have a transcript evaluation completed by UNI, a student MUST send a letter requesting an evaluation of course work toward the Driver Education endorsement to:
Office of the Registrar
227 Gilchrist Hall
University of Northern Iowa
Cedar Falls, IA 50614-0006
Transcripts from ALL institutions attended MUST be included with the evaluation request letter.
