This program is designed primarily for people who wish to advance personally and professionally in a variety of positions in the criminal justice system. In particular, those who work in law enforcement, corrections or rehabilitation services, as well as people who simply wish to expand their understanding of the field of criminology, can benefit from the program. This program may also be applicable toward the Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) degree program.

Courses are offered in a guided independent study format with courses delivered online, utilizing a computer conferencing program (WebCT). Use of WebCT requires access to the Internet and a web browser -- no additional software is required.

980:001 Introduction to Sociology, 3 credit hours
Scientific approach to analysis and understanding of culture, human groups and institutions, personality, self and social control.

982:022 Criminal Justice System, 3 credit hours
Genesis, transformation and day-to-day operation of criminal justice within our society; emphasis on interrelationships between specific stages in the crime-control process and the differences between U.S. and other criminal justice systems. Prerequisites: 980:001; sophomore standing

982:025 Criminology, 3 credit hours
Introduction to the study of criminal behavior, with emphasis on social science approaches. Overview of types of crime, and theories, methods and data used to study crime. Prerequisite: 980:001

982:112 White Collar Crime, 3 credit hours
Examination of theoretical definition, social impact, and changing relationship between current technological advancements and society's ability to both detect and punish white collar criminals.

982:119g Victimology, 3 credit hours
Sociological investigation of institutional, economic, family and personal victimization in American society with special attention to the causes and processes of exploitation. Prerequisites: 980:001; junior standing

982:127 Juvenile Delinquency, 3 credit hours
This course studies the types of juvenile delinquents, causes of delinquent behavior, social institutions and their effect upon delinquency, prevention, and control of delinquent behavior. Prerequisite: 980:001

Tuition & Fees

Tuition is $180 per credit hour — due at the time of enrollment. No additional tuition is charged for out-of-state or graduate students. A non-refundable $13 enrollment fee is assessed for each course. Students enrolling in web courses will be charged a technology fee based upon the number of credit hours enrolled. MasterCard, VISA and Discover cards are accepted, and university billing is available.

For UNI students, tuition for guided independent study courses is in addition to the full-time on-campus rate. In general, independent courses do not qualify students for financial aid at UNI.
