Teaching English in Secondary Schools MA program to begin Summer 2013

University of Northern Iowa’s Department of Languages and Literatures, via Continuing and Distance Education, is proposing to offer a Master of Arts degree in Teaching English in Secondary Schools (TESS) beginning Summer 2013. The program is designed primarily for Iowa middle-level and secondary teachers, and includes courses in English Education pedagogy, writing practice and pedagogy, classroom research strategies/methodologies, and literature studies — with close examination of the range of literature read by adolescents.

The three-year program uses a cohort model in which a group of students moves through the course sequence together. Courses are offered during the fall and spring semesters via interactive video conferencing and online. Summer courses require on-campus attendance. When asked what he would say to a prospective TESS student, professor Jim Davis replied, "Teaching is a lifelong quest for 'better' — TESS can be a pivotal stage in yours."
