summer 2012 institutes & workshops
Iowa Writing Project institutes and workshops are designed for K–College practicing teachers, any discipline. Special tuition rate for teachers: $100 per unit of graduate credit — compared to the regular tuition rate of $431 per unit of graduate credit.
Please note that graduate credit may not apply to all degree programs. Consult your specific program advisor.
Prerequisite for all IWP credit-bearing activities: teacher licensure or consent of the instructor and/or IWP Director.

ENGLISH 6286 Studies in the Teaching of Writing
$400 for 4 hours graduate credit, plus $50 materials fee
This initial level institute meets Monday through Friday, six hours daily, and focuses on the teaching of writing and uses of writing to learn across disciplines and program levels through professional dialogue and reading, demonstrated practice and writing experience.
ENGLISH 6286 Advanced Studies in Writing and Learning
$400 for 4 hours graduate credit, plus $50 materials fee
This advanced level institute meets Monday through Friday, six hours daily, and focuses on individual and shared investigation of practice, related to implementation of practices following participation in the IWP initial level institute, and on writing — especially revision — experience in a writing workshop.
Prerequisite: prior participation in initial level IWP institute.
ENGLISH 5133 Teaching Deliberatively: Writing and Civic Literacy
Interdisciplinary teams preferred; 3 hours graduate credit option from IWP; registration covered by donor.
This workshop, for interdisciplinary teams of high school teachers, meets Monday-Friday, 6+ hours daily, and features attention to public issues and deliberative democracy while using writing to develop civic literacy as authorized by Iowa Core and national standards. Participants will explore levels of implementation and high school transformation by bringing issue exploration and public deliberation into school curriculum and community life. Participants will learn how to help students frame local issues for deliberation, and how to convene, moderate, record and report on local deliberative forums. Sharing implementation experiences will highlight two follow-up sessions in the fall. Two follow-up sessions will be held during the school year.

ENGLISH 5133 Teaching First-Year College Writing
College/district support preferred; reduced cost through IWP; $300 for 3 hours graduate credit, plus $25 materials fee
This workshop meets Monday–Friday, six contact hours daily, and is for teachers of beginning college writing whether in 2- or 4-year college or high school settings. Expect to explore the nature of, issues in, and exemplary practices for teaching writing to students at the point of transition into college by interacting with colleagues, with professional literature and curriculum materials, and by reflecting on your practice. Two follow-up sessions will be held during the fall.
