Course description

Explore ethical issues and dilemmas in sport and physical activity. Topics include an overview of the study of ethics, sportsmanship and cheating, gender equity, intimidation and aggression, performance aids, racial and ethnic equity, negligence and legal responsibilities.

Overview

The purpose of this course is to explore ethical issues and dilemmas in sport and physical activity. Topics include an overview of the study of ethics, sportsmanship and cheating, gender equity, intimidation and aggression, performance aids, racial and ethnic equity, negligence, and legal responsibilities.

Course Organization

This course will be delivered over the World Wide Web, utilizing web pages and a computer conferencing program (eLearning). Use of eLearning requires access to the Internet and a web browser, i.e., Netscape or Internet Explorer. Other than basic word processing, no additional software is required.

This course is divided into 10 assignments. It is required that you work your way through the course sequentially. Assignments 1- 9 will start with one or two real-life scenarios that will introduce you to the topic. You will respond to the real-life scenario(s) and then after your instructor grades that portion of the assignment you will be allowed to continue with the assignment. The second portion of these assignments provide you with a general review of the literature to read and then require a short written assignment asking you to reflect on the topic. The link to the second portion of the assignment will be active as soon as your response to the scenario(s) is graded, usually within 1-3 days after it is submitted.

Assignment 10 is a final comprehensive paper.

Grading

Course evaluation will be based on nine assignments and one final comprehensive paper. Assignments 1-9 will be worth 10 points while the final paper Assignment 10 will be worth 25 points. The total number of points accumulated will determine grades. The grading scale for the course is as follows:.

  • A = 108-115
  • A- = 103-107
  • B+ = 100-102
  • B = 95-99
  • B- = 92-94
  • C+ = 88-91
  • C = 84-87
  • C- = 81-83
  • D+ = 77-80
  • D = 72-76
  • D- = 69-71

Assignments 1- 9 will be assessed using the following values:
  • Real-life scenario response 2 pts.
  • 2 pts. for complete response
  • 1 pt. for partial response
  • 0 pts. for unsatisfactory/inadequate response
  • Written Assignment 8 pts.
  • 8 pts. for superior response addressing all aspects of the assignment, including rationale for the response
  • 7 pts. for response addressing all aspects of the assignment with limited rationale
  • 6 pts. for partial response with limited rationale
  • 5 pts. for partial response with no rationale
  • 0-4 pts. for unsatisfactory/failing responses
